House prices increased in Swindon in September, new figures show.

The increae contributes to the longer-term trend, which has seen property prices in the area achieve 4.1 per cent annual growth.

The average Swindon house price in September was £222,544, Land Registry figures show – a 2.1 per cent increase on August.

Over the month, the picture was worse than across the south west, where prices increased 3.3 per cent, but Swindon outperformed the 1.7 per cent rise for the UK as a whole.

Over the last year, the average sale price of property in Swindon rose by £8,800.

The best annual growth in the region was in Cheltenham, where properties increased on average by 10.8 per cent, to £302,000. At the other end of the scale, properties in Torridge dropped one per cent in value, giving an average price of £234,000.

Owners of detached houses saw the biggest improvement in property prices in Swindon in September – they increased 2.7 per cent, to £386,942 on average. Over the last year, prices rose by 5.2 per cent.

Semi-detached homes were up 1.8 per cent monthly and up 5 per cent annually, with an average of £244,984.

Terraced homes were up 1.9 per cent monthly and up 4.3 per cent annually, £194,132 average.

Flats went up 2 per cent monthly and up 0.7 per cent annually with a £138,818 average.

First-time buyers in Swindon spent an average of £​190,900 on their property. This was ​£6,900 more than a year ago, ​and ​£34,000 more than in Sep-15.

By comparison, former owner-occupiers paid £​256,400 on average in September​ – 34.3 per cent more than first-time buyers.
