A “GUARDIAN angel” was caught doing 38mph over the speed limit – as she raced to help a stricken friend.

Swindon Magistrates’ Court heard Jacqueline Gregory had been on her way to help her elderly friend, who and had had a fall, when she was clocked by police doing 108mph on the M4 near Swindon on January 12 last year.

The grandmother-of-three was behind the wheel of a grey Mercedes GLA.

Philip Trotter, for Gregory, said his 62-year-old client was “one of life’s guardian angels”. She looked after her poorly friend and walking the woman’s West Highland Terrier dog.

On the day she was caught speeding she had been called by the woman, who had fallen in her home. Mr Trotter said of his client: “She completely zoned out, thinking of her friend at the top of her stairs. I hope you can imagine the agony of that moment. She admits she knew she was speeding in her Mercedes, she didn’t think she was doing anything like that speed.”

At the time, she had also been experiencing difficulties at her work, JPs heard. She had since moved jobs.

Gregory, of Polesdon Avenue, Badbury Park, admitted speeding.

Magistrates imposed six penalty points, noting Gregory was a carer for an elderly person and had a clean driving licence. She was fined £330 and ordered to pay £143 in costs and surcharge.
