AMERICA can begin to rebuild after four years of a terrible Trump presidency now that Joe Biden is in charge.

That’s the verdict of Charles Hill, a Gulf War veteran from Louisiana who was based at RAF Fairford and then settled in Swindon afterwards.

Mr Hill hoped Donald Trump would lose the election but the events that followed Mr Biden’s victory shocked him. He looked on as the leader of his home country refused to admit defeat and Mr Trump’s riled-up followers attempted a violent coup.

Charles said: “It was painful and pitiful to see him refusing to accept the results even though 81 million people said ‘No, you lost’ and wanted him out of office. It would have defused the situation if he had.

“I was in total shock when I saw Trump voters storming the Capitol. It was crazy, my heart dropped, it made me so sad. I thought it wasn’t right and that it could not and should not happen in America but it unveiled a mask the country had been holding up for years.

“He incited it, he should have been tried for treason and sedition along with the other people in his party who knew it was wrong but stood by him and encouraged it and, even after it happened, were still saying the same rhetoric.

“Now he can leave, we can forget about this clown and his name will disappear from my vocabulary. Hopefully the impeachment will go through and maybe he’ll go to jail, though that might just be wishful thinking.

“Good riddance - I said when Trump was elected that he will set things back 100 years and he did. He will go down in history as the worst US president with the lowest approval rating.”

Now that Joe Biden is in the White House and a surprise victory in Georgia has given the Democrats control of the law-making Senate, Mr Hill has hope for the future.

He added: “I’m really happy, it’s fantastic. I’m staying optimistic and keeping my fingers crossed that he can clean this mess up.

“Biden is presidential, he speaks calmly and sincerely and with a message of hope to America and the world that he will work hard to get us back to how we were and rebuild to something better.

“He and Vice President Kamala Harris have a tough task ahead of them but they understand what needs to be done.

“He has a proven track record of working with the opposition, his cabinet picks are highly qualified and diverse in a way that reflects the real America, he’s a good deal-maker and he wants to get this virus under control.

“71 million people still voted for Trump but they might wake up when they see how Biden helps them, because Trump didn’t care about them at all, he conned them and let them struggle for so long.

“The inauguration is a time of celebration and spectacle, and though it was marred by the coup and Covid, it was a great thing to see.

“America has risen from the ashes before and it will do it again. There is hope at last.

“To our British allies, the United States will always have your back."
