AN OLD Town man was caught drink driving after police pulled him over for going the wrong-way down a one-way street.

Carl Leppard’s solicitor told Swindon Magistrates’ Court the 31-year-old had been at a friend’s house and had drunk a can of Foster’s and a small measure of sambuca.

He went to move his car after spotting an empty space outside his friend’s house. He did not realise he was over the drink drive limit.

Emma Hillier, for Leppard, said her client knew Oxford Street in the Railway Village, where he was caught by police, was a one-way system. “He accepts he shouldn’t have done that. He knew it was a one-way street. He was taking a short-cut.”

Leppard, of Tunnicliffe Close, Old Town, pleaded guilty to drink driving. After testing positive at the roadside he blew 43mgcs of alcohol in 100ml of breath at the police station. The legal limit is 35.

He was fined £250, banned from driving for a year and ordered to pay £119 in costs and surcharge.
