Covingham Drive remains shut between Piccadilly roundabout on Dorcan Way and the mini-roundabout giving access to the shops at Covingham Square.

Work is being done to widen the roundabout to increase capacity before 8,000 houses are built as part of the New Eastern Villages expansion programme.

The road closure will be in place until next Saturday and will allow Swindon Borough Council’s contractor to carry out essential work during lockdown restrictions before the schools reopen on Monday, March 8.

A spokesman for the council said: “When the improvement scheme is complete, Piccadilly roundabout will include a larger central island, widened approaches and controlled crossings, which will benefit cyclists and pedestrians."

As part of the roads infrastructure project the White Hart Roundabout is being widened, while a new ramp onto the northbound carriageway of the A419 is added.

The junction of Oxford Road and Nythe Road is being widened and the Gablecross roundabout improved for the same reason.

The council says work on Oxford Road and Piccadilly roundabout is expected to be competed by the spring.
