A FORD Focus driver drove into a woman on a zebra crossing.

Sarah Bye, 58, was fined £440 and given six points after Swindon magistrates found a charge of careless driving proved.

Prosecutor Mike Smith said the victim had stopped at the zebra crossing on Hungerdown Lane, Chippenham, at around 5.45pm on January 28, 2020. She looked both ways and saw cars slow before she stepped onto the crossing.

The woman was struck by Bye’s car, suffered bruising and had to take 11 days off work.

Interviewed under caution at the roadside, Bye, of Cedar Grove, Chippenham, said she’d approached the pedestrian crossing but didn’t see anyone so accelerated slowly looking forwards.

The victim of the crash was then in front of her, she said. She’d braked hard and estimated her speed to be around 15mph. Bye said: “She was on the crossing, I was at fault.”

Magistrates found Bye guilty in her absence of driving without due care and attention. She was fined £440, given six points and ordered to pay £154 in costs and surcharge.
