AN ANIMAL rescue team from Stratton's fire station helped save three distressed cows stranded in a Wiltshire river.

The team joined a rescue effort which included a fire crew from Calne and an animal rescue-trained officer at the river Marden in Calne, by the Castlefields Canal and River Park.

A spokesman for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "One cow released itself without assistance, one cow was unfortunately found to be deceased, and another cow was rescued from the river by the animal rescue team.

"The deceased cow was removed by the farmer using farm machinery."

The 999 call came in at 1.14pm on Friday.
