A BMW driver is in custody after being arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and having cannabis.

Police suspect the 22-year-old motorist may have been on the way to carry out a burglary as they arrested him on suspicion of "going equipped to steal".

The police helicopter hovered around the town centre at around midday on Thursday after a vehicle failed to stop police near the Greenbridge retail park at 11am.

Witnesses on the ground reported seeing the airborne vehicle flying above Swindon's courts, Covingham, Oxford Road and the retail park.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "At around 11am, a vehicle failed to stop for police close to the Greenbridge Retail Park. Officers carried out a search of the area and the car, a silver BMW, was located in Melville Close around half an hour later.

“A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, going equipped to steal, possession of cannabis and failing to provide a specimen of breath. He is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.”
