HIGHWAYS England has apologised after HGVs were directed towards a Wroughton road closure.
Overnight works at junction 15 on Wednesday meant lorries and a double decker bus were directed through Chiseldon towards Wroughton.
But the large vehicles were forced to turn around when they reached Marlborough Road, as the road had earlier been shut by Thames Water to allow contractors to carry out works.
One HGV left deep tyre ruts on a traffic island after it attempted to about turn at the junction of The Pitchens and Marlborough Road.
Apologising for the disruption, Highways England project manager Adrian Simon said: “Roadworks are always planned overnight to minimise disruption, but on this occasion our unplanned works at M4 Junction 15 – where we had closed the eastbound exit slip road – impacted on utility works on Swindon Borough Council’s road network.
“It meant diverted traffic from junction 16 was affected by the local works, we apologise for the inconvenience and we are working closely with Swindon Borough Council to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
