Organisers of a protest about the fate of the Oasis fear for the entire future of the iconic leisure centre.

The Save Oasis Swindon campaign has organised the rally for Saturday, June 19 and says it is critical to keep the building as a leisure facility for Swindon.

The building has been shut since October when the then-operators Better said it could not make enough profit after the first lockdown of 2020 and a partial re-opening.

Since then it has seen a number of break-ins and incursions, with leaseholder Seven Capital and landowner Swindon Borough Council both coming under fire for not doing enough to keep the North Star building secure and progressing its reopening.

A spokesman for the campaign said: “We urge the people of Swindon to come down to the front of the Oasis Leisure Centre on Saturday, June 19 from 2pm until 3.30pm for a protest, as we feel that time is running out to save the building.”

Since the announcement of the closure Better has handed the keys back to Seven Capital.

A series of intruders have posted videos and pictures online – the latest was a video posted to TikTok on Sunday showing a young woman walking on one of the slides.

Seven Capital has also put forward initial plans to replace the famous dome and build a new leisure centre on the site. Many in the town want to keep the existing buildings, which both the council and Seven Capital say are not economical to run.

There is an application to have the domed building listed by Historic England, which the heritage organisation is considering.

Author and blogger Angela Atkinson is a supporter of the campaign to keep the existing building and get it reopened as soon as possible.

She said: “This really is an SOS now. Swindon is about to hit the mother of all icebergs.

“Without the dome and that facility it will be culturally poorer and architecturally blander. What’s more, demolishing that dome will be an act of shameful cultural vandalism.”

Council leader David Renard told members of the champaign at a scrutiny committee meeting this week that the security of the building and its reopening is a matter for Seven Capital, which holds a 99-year lease.

A spokesman for Seven Capital said: “We continue to work with Swindon Borough Council to determine and confirm a viable solution for the Oasis,”

The rally, which is to be socially-distanced, begins at 2pm on Saturday, 19 June at the centre in North Star.
