TESCO has announced its Metro in Swindon town centre is to become an Express.

And it is a decision South Swindon MP Robert Buckland says has concerned people liing in the town.

The store is next to the former Debenhams building in The Parade and Mr Buckland - also the Justice Secretary - is worried it will mean customers paying more for their groceries.

He tweeted: "Concerned to have received reports that Tesco Metro in Swindon town centre will be changing to a Tesco Express, which may result in higher prices and less offers. I have contacted Tesco today to ask for an update and to request that this store remains a Tesco Metro."

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Over the last few years we have seen our customers’ shopping habits change and we have taken the decision to re-brand all of our Metro stores to better reflect this.

"Our Metro format was originally designed for larger, weekly shops, but today nearly 70 per cent of customers use them as convenience stores, buying food for that day, so the majority of them will be rebranded as Express stores.”
