"THE end is almost in sight" for long-suffering motorists using the busy Moonrakers junction.
The £2.8m transformation of the roundabouts started 12 months ago and had been due for completion in the spring.
But after a year of disruption for drivers and businesses in the area, all the roads coming off the junction which has been changed from a double mini-roundabout to a light controlled crossroads are now open to traffic.
A post on Swindon Borough Council’s Facebook page said: “Whitworth Road and Beechcroft Road have been reopened and motorists are now able to use all four arms of the Moonrakers junction for their journeys.
“Over the next few days, engineers will be on-site to fully optimise the new Smart traffic lights at the junction.
"These lights will use sensors and technology to reduce day-to-day congestion by regulating traffic through the junction in real-time and prioritising the lanes with heavier traffic flow.
“The end is almost in sight, and we’d like to thank local residents and drivers for their patience while these works have been carried out.
"The remaining work on site is expected to be completed in August."
Roadworks Survey - How have they affected you?
The influential scrutiny committee of Swindon Borough Council is to look into the impact of major roadworks projects on the lives of people in Swindon. Chairman of the committee, Labour councillor Jim Robbins has asked The Adver to help the committee find out how people have been affected. He said: “The committee wants to find out how over-running projects have impacted on people and it’s important we get good data before making recommendations to the council administration. “I’m aware that id we put questions on the council website we’d get many fewer responses than if the survey was carried by the Acer, so I’m grateful for its help. “I’d like as many people as possible to respond as honestly as possible. Delays and congestion affect a lot of people in Swindon- and we need a true picture of what’s going on to be able to get the issue fixed.” The survey will be hosted on the Adver website until the end of August.
