A HOUSE of horrors shocked and appalled Adver readers.

We reported on how a nightmare tenant left a rented Toothill property in covered in mess. Devastated landlords Vic and Jane Shoulders found piles of rubbish, an extremely dirty toilet and a collapsed kitchen ceiling among the filth.

The couple had hoped to move into the house after they retired but now face hefty repair costs.

Bedrooms were full of general rubbish, takeaway packaging, dirty clothes, human faeces, children’s toys and mouldy food. An outside ivy plant had been allowed to grow out of control and the bathroom was left in an horrific state.

Here's what you had to say on the situation...

JANETTE DUNNE: "How awful for those people to find their home like that. The tenant should be taken to court and made to pay for the damages and cleaning costs and put on a 'do not rent to tenant' list. Filthy."

ALLYSON THOMPSON: "How do people live like that? I hope the owners can get it to how they want it to live in."

ELSPETH HUGHES: "Absolutely disgusting."

AMY FRANCIS: "This is truly awful. I agree the tenant should be taken to court to pay for damages.

"Cncerning there were faeces on a toy fire truck- so children lived there? My heart breaks for them.

"I have to ask did the landlord or letting agent not conduct routine house inspections? Not that it will help now but could have spotted things before they got this bad? Just hope it doesn't cost the landlords too much money to fix."

LINDSEY HENDERSON: "Absolutely disgusting… just awful."

DARLENE BURBERRY: "Some people have no shame."

ANNE DAWSON: "Absolutely horrible and, no doubt, gone elsewhere. Nightmare stuff."

WENDY COLE: "Oh disgusting, break down the house or flat, it's making me feel sick, disgusting, that's horrible nightmare stuff."

SUE TURNER: "This just shows when people rent out homes they need to check on them more."

JULIA SLACK: "Awful - how the hell can a tenant have more say than the owner of the house? Crazy."

SASKIA LAVEY: "Oh my God, only there since January 2020 and they got it in that state?"

THERESA SHERIDAN: "We live next door to one such renter. The garden is like the tip, literally rubbish all over it including bottles. The curtains are hanging off the windows, I actually dread to think what it's like inside.

"The landlord resides in another country, I bet he has no clue. We hope to sell our house in the near future, but we have no hope right now until their garden alone is cleaned up."

ALAN CHISHOLM: "Its a very sad state of affairs that landlords find themselves in because the laws and controls have been totally undermined by government and it will only serve to reduce the amount of rental properties available putting up rents too.

"It does not matter how much checking you do beforehand, some people have very low morals and think landlords are rich.

"Totally wrong that people get away with it."

WAYNE BRIGGINSHAW: "This is one big reason I would never rent my home out to anyone."

RICHARD JOHNSON: "Only people who don't care do this. Everywhere I have stayed I always treat it as my own."

JO CARLTON: "This must have been absolutely heartbreaking for the owners of the property.

"They put their trust in their tenant and had their housed trashed.

It's so disgusting what that tenant did to the place."
