A LORRY got stuck under a railway bridge in South Marston - and people living there fear others will suffer a similar fate.

The HGV's trailer was precariously balanced after the incident in Old Vicarage Lane on Tuesday.

Haulage drivers have been seeking alternate routes around Swindon because of the 12-week closure of the White Hart roundabout but this particular route is signposted with unsuitable diversion signs, as well as height and weight limits.

Ray Hurley, 42, from the area thinks it is only a matter of time before somebody gets hurt.

“This is is just one of the features that make our roads unsuitable for HGVs,” he said.

“There are also chicanes, parked cars and a narrow T-junction in the centre of the village.

“The 7.5 tonne weight limit is sometimes ignored by drivers, but they mostly only try it once.

“The sheer volume of traffic making its way through our narrow and pathless village centre is overwhelming due to construction works in progress.

“This time it was only a bridge that got hit, but how soon until it’s a person?”
Network Rail were informed of the incident and had to pause rail traffic over the bridge until the situation was resolved.

It is believed the route was blocked for 30 minutes on Tuesday.

The White Hart roundabout closure to allow necessary repairs to the base of the road began last month.
