Those of us with memories of winning a goldfish from one of the carnival games at a funfair may very well be the last people in Swindon to do so, as a motion has been tabled for debate at Swindon Borough Council to ban live animals being used in prizes.

Newly-elected Conservative councillor for Priory Vale Jo Morris has put forward a motion to be debated at the council’s full meeting on Thursday which, if approved, would mean a licence to use council land would be refused to any event using live animals as prizes.

The RSPCA launched a campaign to get the winning of live animals in these games banned, and while it is banned in Scotland, it is currently up to individual councils to set their own rules in England.

So, is winning a goldfish in a plastic bag harmless fun, or is it something that should’ve been banned years ago? Swindon Advertiser readers had their say on the council's plans.

Vanessa Louise Margrave: "About time! How on earth this was ever thought a good idea I’ll never know."

Rhoda Flannigan: "Definitely. No animal should be given as winnings."

Alex Coppock-Bunce: "Especially as they have been proven to feel pain, get stressed and have memory."

David Oakley: "Not seen goldfish in a fair for years. Sure its still a thing?"

Brett V Adams: "Archaic practice, surprised its taken this long to ban. What kind of mattress thinks its ethical to use a fish in a bag as a prize?"

Rich Ayres: "You wouldn’t give away kittens and puppies as prizes so why fish? How many parents are going straight to the pet shop for a tank , pump and all the other stuff you need to keep fish."

Heather Ward: "It was still going when I went to a fair two weeks ago."

Zoe Marie Mckenna: "I totally agree [it should be banned]. Although I still have my two gold fish from the fair ground 8 years ago… and they're massive now."

Abbey Road Temlett: "Any live animal should be treated with respect. Not swinging around in a bag. To go to a home who has no way of caring for it!"

Linda Chivers: "We won a goldfish at a fair about 30+ years ago, he lived to be about 12 and moved house with us twice."

Helena Czajkowska: "We also won goldfish which lasted years, children were over the moon and helped to look after them."

Jason Rascalsglitch Daffern: "Seriously it's a fish get over it. Stop being a Karen."

Roslyn Wallbank: "If that was the prize I wouldn't even play the game."

Tania Watarawi: "What kind of stupid prize is that. Not to mention cruel for the fish."

Jenna Blake: "I won a goldfish from a fair when I was three (Goldie) I had it for years and it moved house with me. I loved it and took great care of it."

Shane Willis: "Definitely it’s cruel to give them away like that."

Nemo Llewellyn: "What a shame use to love winning them."

Samantha Babb: "They were already banned as a cruelty issue, then suddenly they turned up again!"

Irene Glass Ne Gray: "I haven't seen these in fairs for years ,thought they were already banned."

Helena Williams Bowie: "I thought it was a thing of the past. I had a few back in the 80s."

Mihai Tantau: "Newly elected councillor should be concerned about all the road works and the state of the traffic in Swindon, not about a gold fish given to be taken care of."

Graham Philpot: "Could be banned? Should’ve been banned years ago."

Sue Venn: "Gutted , My Fergal lived 10 years. "

Ian Williams: "Its just a pity they don't want to protect the fish in the lakes and rivers from otters, cormorants and polluters as well then."
