POLICE have cordoned off a field between Pinehurst and Gorse Hill after a serious assault.
UPDATE: Murder investigation launched after fatal stabbing
Two crime scene investigation vans have parked up in a small cul-de-sac off May Close and a team of around six forensics investigators have donned white suits and protective clothing to examine the scene.
A large tent is in place on the crest of a tall mound of grass on the field known as The Venny.
Officers and ambulance crews responded to calls from May Close at around 2.15pm.
Police remain at the scene with two cars and officers. Cyclists heading towards the Pinehurst Road cycle path from Haydon are being stopped and diverted away from the rest of the route.
When one cyclist saw the officers, he remarked: "What, another stabbing?" though police have not yet confirmed the nature of the attack.
A police spokesman said: "Our enquiries are on-going and we'll update as soon as possible."
