The reason why the A419 off-slip onto Merlin Way has remained closed despite Merlin Way re-opening has been revealed by Swindon Borough Council
Councillor Russell Holland looked into the issue after locals raised it, and received the following explanation that he posted onto social media.
Firstly, there are concerns about the road surface on Covingham Drive as it was not designed for repetitive HGV use. If the off-slip were to reopen it would be a problem because there would be no control over HGVs using the road as an alternative route, which would cause damage to the road.
Secondly, there are fears that motorists will leave at the junction expecting to be able to connect to the White Hart roundabout system and will then be forced to rejoin the A419.
For these two reasons it has been agreed with National Highways that the road will remain closed until the White Hart roundabout work is finished.
