A Swindon animal lover is appealing for Christmas shoe boxes to donate to needy cats and dogs at local rescue centres this year.

Claire Hill has been organising the annual shoe box collection for five years and last year received about 150 boxes containing items such as treats and toys.

She said: "I started getting a few boxes together for pound dogs mainly up north and a lady used to transport them but when that ended I thought I'd carry it on myself and do it for local rescues.

"We always get a good response and it's lovely to be able to make Christmas Day a bit special for the homeless pets with some posh lunch, a few toys and treats while they wait for their forever home.

Swindon Advertiser:

"The large rescues tend to run their own appeals so I like to cover the smaller ones.

"Previously, I have donated boxes to local greyhound kennels with ex-racers waiting for their new homes."

Claire is hoping to collect more boxes than last year and will be accepting donations until the start of December.

Drove Vets in Stratton is one of the drop-off points.
