FESTIVE - if freezing cold - fun filled Lydiard Park over the weekend as hundreds of people donned Christmassy costumes for the return of the Santa vs Rudolph Run.

A crowd of red-and-white coats, Christmas jumpers, antlers and Santa hats filled the field near the car park as hundreds of runners, joggers and walkers of all ages warmed up for their Lapland-themed laps.

After a dance-heavy Zumba session with Lucy and Sian, the 500-strong crowd set off, with dedicated fundraiser Neil Russell leading the way.

Neil has finished several fundraising feats, including 31 marathons and a journey from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Kate Crutcher received a round of applause when Catherine Newman rom Brighter Futures mentioned this event marked the last of Kate's 17 fundraising challenges which have been completed in memory of her loved ones.

The event is a fusion of Brighter Futures' Santa Run and the Swindon Phoenix Rotary Club's Reindeer Run, with a team of volunteers from both groups putting lots of their free time and effort into making sure it all went smoothly.

The pandemic meant last year's run had to be a virtual one so organisers were delighted to be able to host it in-person again this time.

Rotary Club president and Brighter Futures development manager Adam X said: "It's been a very difficult period for everyone so getting back to a sense of normality was the right thing to do.

"The turnout has always been fantastic but we were not sure how this one was going to go after all that's happened. It's exceeded expectations and there's been an incredible effort from unseen heroes behind the scenes to get this ready."

Cat Newman added: "It's great to be back - a massive thank-you for coming out on this windy and wintry day. It's been a horrible two years but thank you for your continued support.

"The new radiotherapy centre looks incredible and the fundraising is helping to look after our healthcare workers."

The Great Western Hospital NHS Harmony Choir, the Ministry of Samba, and the Rock Choir of North Wiltshire soundtracked the strolls and sprints around the park.

In the run-up to the event, George Scarrott and Son's Family Fun Fairs provided rides and attractions to keep families entertained in the run-up to the run.

People took selfies in Santa's sleigh and had a look at a Wiltshire Air Ambulance car.
