OFSTED inspectors have praised Churchfields School for its boost in GCSE achievement over the last 12 months.

The team of inspectors visited the school in Swindon in December.

In a letter to pupils this week lead inspector Rob Hubbleday praised the students for their attitude and behaviour.

Mr Hubbleday said: "We were impressed by the way in which you told us quite openly about the strengths and areas of concern that you have for your school.

"You and most of your parents think you go to a good school and we agree. The vast majority of you enjoy school and attend willingly and the results of GCSE exams have risen very well."

The school's overall score was good and governors were told that they were outstanding in discharging their responsibilities.

Attendance and standards reached by learners were marked down as satisfactory but head teacher Steve Flavin said that there were no nasty surprises.

Mr Flavin, who has been head teacher at the school for six years, added: "We know there are things we have to improve on but they are things we are improving on already.

"I'm delighted with the report and now we plan to take on board the latest advice and build on that for the next inspection."

For pupils at the school the report marks a second achievement.

At the beginning of the month Churchfields celebrated its best GCSE results in the school's history with 62 per cent of students achieving five A to C grades including maths and English.

The pass rate represented a further increase on last year's success and were the best results the school had recorded in its 43-year-history.

Mr Flavin said: "Churchfields won praise for it's work by Ofsted last year who described Churchfields as a good and improving school'.

"This year's success was a huge boost for the whole of Churchfields School community and provides a strong foundation for even greater success next year."
