Swindon Borough Council has been awarded more than £92,000 by the government to help rough sleepers in to the new Omicron Covid variant.

The money is designed to accommodate those on the streets and to increase vaccinations among the homeless.

On the matter of the 31 rough sleepers counted in December, cabinet member for housing and public safety Cathy Martynsaid: “Although the numbers may seem high for those rough sleeping each month, the average number for each night paints a different picture.

“While there were 31 people seen sleeping out for the month in December, there was only an average of three people per night as swift solutions were found or people chose to return to the accommodation they have available.

“The reasons for rough sleeping can be complex and we will always try and find solutions for anyone who needs our assistance.

“Accommodation is offered quickly to any known rough sleeper in Swindon who has access to public funds and has a connection to the area.”

The council commissions Threshold Housing Link for its outreach service to identify any new rough sleepers so SBC can then offer advice and assistance.

And Swindon Night Shelter runs a day centre where anyone who is facing homelessness can seek advice and support.

The annual Temporary Winter Housing Provision, which opened on January 4, will run until March.

Coun Martin said: “There are seven bed spaces and, as clients move on, these spaces will be utilised for new rough sleepers or those at risk of rough sleeping.

“Clients will be offered support with finding accommodation, finances, health and substance abuse.

“Alongside this we have a range of accommodation options and work with other areas within the council as well as partners and local organisations to offer support alongside those. There is also funding available to reconnect people.”

“If anyone is at risk of becoming homeless, or knows someone who might be, please contact our team on 01793 445503 or by making a report at streetlink.org.uk”
