Emergency repairs on M4 continue after lorry fire

Our live feed has now finished.

  • Traffic has been queueing on the M4 all morning because the road is still partly closed 16 hours after a lorry carrying hay bales near Chippenham was reported.
  • Emergency repairs and recovery work continue so the first two lanes between junction 16 and 17 are closed which means the westbound exit slip road at junction 17 is inaccessible.
  • Traffic queues five miles long were reported earlier this morning.
  • Police first reported the fire incident at 6.17pm yesterday and it took until 12.30am to release hundreds of vehicles stuck in tailbacks.
  • The fire is now out but the road is still being cleared up by National Highways and Wiltshire Police.
  • The services said they would reopen the road as soon as it was safe to do so.
