A road in Haydon Wick could be partially closed until Friday after a water main burst and caused havoc yesterday.

The burst pipe on Thames Avenue was repaired at around 5.30am this morning by Thames Water. Temporary traffic lights will now be put in place to allow the road surface to set.

The permit for this partial road closures lasts until Friday but the measures may be lifted before then.

The leaked water flooded the roads on Saturday morning so emergency services were called to the site at around 7.35am.

Swindon Advertiser:

By about 12pm, Thames Avenue was closed between Tweed Close and Blunsdon Road.

Thames Water staff worked throughout the night to fix the problem and advised that water supplies should be back to normal.

This morning residents noticed that drivers had tried to cut across a pedestrian geeen between Seaton Close and Rother Close because of the road closure. Tyre marks were left in the grass.

Becky Murphy said: "Whilst I understand the current situation is frustrating, driving across the green is not acceptable.

Swindon Advertiser:

"Kids play round here and people are constantly walking through."

Another said it was "dangerous and lazy".

A Thames Water spokesman said: “We’re sorry to anyone who has been affected by a burst on a 10-inch diameter water pipe in Thames Avenue, Swindon.

“Our engineers were quickly on the scene and worked hard to restore the water supply to the majority of homes on Saturday, ahead of carrying out a full repair overnight.

“Bottled water was provided residents who lost supply, while our customer team has also visited the area to offer help to those affected by the burst.

"Some customers may find their water in and out due to air bubbles in the pipe but these should be cleared if they run their taps for a few minutes."
