Police have warned drivers who are cutting across footpaths and grass verges to avoid a Haydon Wick Road closure face prosecution for dangerous driving.

Thames Avenue was partially closed last weekend after a water main burst, with utility firm Thames Water having to delay its reopening to Wednesday.

PCSO duo Lee and Kate are usually known for their light-hearted videos on Swindon Police’s Facebook page but this one took a more serious turn.

Lee Hare said: “There are cameras and CCTV so you could prosecuted for dangerous driving which is a fine and you’re going to get points on your licence.

“Any people who have already done it, be warned we may be coming around.

“So please bear that in mind and do not do it. It takes an extra minute to drive around the diversion route.

“Please don’t risk your licence, it’s not worth it. If you hit somebody, you’re in serious trouble.”

Resident Becky Murphy said: “Whilst I understand the current situation is frustrating, driving across the green is not acceptable. Kids play round here and people are constantly walking through.”

Another said it was “dangerous and lazy”.
