HGV drivers are ignoring signs at a controversial road closure in Wroughton - and finding themselves stuck at a dead end.

The village has seen major disruption following the unpopular closure of Marlborough Road, which is expected to last at last three months.

The closure starts from Wanshot Close off Marlborough Road and ends at the Three Tuns Roundabout north of the Bellway Homes development site.

Lorry drivers have been forced to seek alternatives - but some travelling on Brimble Hill are also ignoring the road closure signs and finding themselves stuck on the small roundabout near Wanshot Close.

Jayne Hanks, who lives in the area, captured some shocking footage of lorries coming across the road closure and having to resort to dangerous turning to escape the dead end, with one person even moving having to shift the barriers.

Residents feel that workers manning temporary traffic lights further down on Brimble Hill should not be allowing HGVs to go past and get stuck where they are.

Wroughton councillors David and Cathy Martyn and Brian Ford agree and have called for more to be done.

"We have seen a number of reports recently of large vehicles ignoring the road closed signs and getting as far as Wanshot Close before realising they cannot get any further and having to turn round," said Coun Martyn.

"I have requested that SBC and contractors urgently review signage etc to ensure vehicles are turned back before reaching the point where the road is impassable.

"I have also asked that the persistent problem of large vehicles continuing to ignore the unsuitable for HGV signs on Priors Hill also be reviewed."

The roadworks comprise of highway improvements associated with the Bellway Homes development, and the installation of a joint service trench from the Wroughton Substation at Inverary Road to the Data Centre at Brimble Hill led by Scottish & Southern Electric (SSE) and Instalcom Ltd.

There have been reports of long wait times at the temporary traffic lights on Brimble Hill, while an increase in the number of vehicles on Priors Hill has led to calls to the police to intervene and damage to the road surface.
