Churches in Wiltshire are being warned to remain vigilant amid fears of a rise in metal thefts.

Specialist insurer Ecclesiastical is warning churches in Wiltshire to stay vigilant and review their security equipment as mental thefts from churches are on the rise.

This comes as thefts are slowly increasing again after the Covid pandemic, and as metal prices continue to rise.

The reason churches in particular are targeted by these thefts are that they usually have a lot of lead, copper and stainless steel roof coverings, which is currently in high demand.

Other areas such as roof flashings, copper lightning conductors and lead rainwater pipes have also been targeted.

High demand for copper and lead specifically, driven by an increase in metal prices, has seen several churches already affected by theft in the first quarter of 2022.

Risk management director at Ecclesiastical Insurance, Jo Whyman said: "Theft of metal can have a devastating impact on churches and heritage buildings.

"Aside from the cost of replacing the metal, further damage can happen as a result of exposure to the elements which can cost thousands of pounds.

"It is vital that churches in Wiltshire take steps to protect themselves from thieves and follow our guidance which is available through our website."
