A few "dangerous drivers" at car meets in Swindon have spoiled the occasions for others as police are now enforcing a partial closure notice for a Sainsbury's car park.

One driver leaving the meet last night was caught driving at 117mph on the A419 by Wiltshire Police's road policing unit.

In recent months, the force has responded to a number of reports of car meets where vehicles have been wheel spinning, drifting, speeding, racing, creating loud noises, and leaving burn marks on the ground.

Officers stressed that most motorists use car meets to showcase their vehicles and are not involved in anti-social behaviour or criminal damage.

But police are now seeking a court order to prevent unauthorised vehicles from accessing Sainsbury's Bridgemead car park off Paddington Drive between 10.15pm and 7am, Monday to Saturday, and 5pm to 7am on Sunday evening. The case will be heard at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Monday.

They have warned that a partial closure notice for this car park is already in place and anyone breaching the terms could be liable for arrest or a fine.

Officers say the large number of recent car meets have left members of the public and businesses "feeling alarmed, harassed, and distressed".

A spokesman added: "The Local Neighbourhood teams have been working in conjunction with partner agencies, as well as the land owners and the retail outlets to deter and resolve the issues raised by the public.

"We want to reassure the public that these issues are being taken seriously and that we are working to make the roads safer.

"Wiltshire Police will not tolerate any anti-social or criminal behaviour reported and robust action will be taken."
