A court has slapped a closure order on part of a Swindon supermarket car park to stop dangerous and noisy driving.

Wiltshire Police has received numerous reports in relation to large car meets across Swindon which now has resulted in a partial closure of car parks.

Issues included vehicles speeding, racing, creating loud noises, wheel spinning, drifting, and numerous incidents of criminal damage due to the vehicle leaving burn marks on the ground, making it hard for residents to sleep and relax.

On 23 May, Swindon Magistrates Court decided to grant a Partial Closure Order for the car park at Sainsbury’s and B&M at Bridgemead.

The court order will stay in place for three months and anyone found breaking the order could face a fine.

The Police's Local Neighbourhood teams will also continue to work in conjunction with partner agencies, as well as the landowners and the retail outlets to deter and resolve the issues raised by the public and make sure they don't reappear.

In a statement published on May 21, Swindon Police said: "We want to reassure the public that these issues are being taken seriously and that we are working to make the roads safer."

Most events that have taken place in the past have been enthusiasts attending the meet and were well-behaved, it has been reported.

However several were not causing problems for several residents living nearby.

Swindon Police said: "Wiltshire Police will not tolerate any anti-social or criminal behaviour reported and robust action will be taken.

"To help enforce this, a Partial Closure Notice has been authorised and put in place at the Car Park of Sainsbury's Supermarket and B&M off of Paddington Drive, Swindon.

"We will be enforcing this and anyone breaching the Partial Closure Notice could be liable for arrest and or a fine."
