Two GWH Admiral nurses have been awarded for their community-based dementia care work helping to support patients and their families.

Tim Allen and Hannah Rogers triumphed out of 87 nominees to win the regional South West Parliamentary Award in the Nursing and Midwifery Category.

The pair have received praise from Great Western Hospital for being recognised for their achievements.

In a post on Facebook, the hospital trust said: "Tim and Hannah work with hundreds of families every year across Swindon and Wiltshire to provide life-changing care. Their work will see huge improvements to dementia care for months and years to come."

The duo have been trained by Dementia UK and specialise in dementia care supporting affected families in the hospital and in their own homes, as well as other hospital staff, giving one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions to people.

On top of this, they have made many positive changes to the way the hospital provides dementia care, working with the Trust charity to launch the Dementia Appeal with funds already going towards the purchase of dementia-friendly clocks and RITA therapy machines.

They also recently took part in a 10k a day challenge to raise funds for the appeal and they have also recently turned a room on the older person’s ward into a dementia-friendly room for patients.

Hannah and Tim said: “We’re surprised yet delighted to receive this award on behalf of our service. Caring for an individual with a diagnosis of dementia is no easy feat and we feel honoured to be welcomed into the lives of so many families who provide such dedicated support each day.

“We’re really pleased that the work we have been doing to enhance patient-centred care for those with dementia has been recognised and we continue to strive to build on our achievements in the years to come. Thank you to everybody who has supported our small team of two over the past four years."

Robert Buckland MP added: “I am delighted that Tim Allen and Hannah Rogers have won the Regional South West Parliamentary Award in the Nursing and Midwifery category.

“It is fantastic that their invaluable work to support patients and families here in Swindon, both in the hospital and in their own homes, with dementia care has been recognised and rewarded.”

Tim and Hannah will now go forward to the national awards ceremony in London on 6 July.
