A top-floor flat in West Swindon has been gutted by flames after a fire broke out late in the evening.

Crews rushed to the block of flats on Marney Road, Grange Park to battle the flames, which could be seen streaming from the window sending plumes of smoke into the air.

The fire lasted for three-and-a-half hours with firefighters from Westlea, Swindon, Royal Wootton Bassett, Stratton and Cricklade helping to tackle it, with the use of an aerial ladder platform.

One person was evacuated from the building by firefighters, and the other residents in the building were safely accounted for.

The fire was contained to the flat it started in, which has been completed destroyed, but two others were damaged by water.

Swindon Advertiser:

A spokesperson from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said. "The stop was at 2.4 am, with four breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets and two covering jets used."

This morning a police officer is stationed outside, and a large amount of household rubbish, furniture and appliances can be seen on the ground in front of the building, which is believed to have come from the flat in question!

One of the windows to the flat can be seen in the floor having been blown out.

The fire service is still investigating the fire and does not yet know how it started.
