Flights in and out of a busy airbase have been grounded as the extreme temperatures cause chaos for military operations.

RAF Brize Norton is the UK’s largest airbase with many flights operating in and out the airfield.

The airbase is also home to the Voyager, the Royal Air Force’s refuelling plane along with several F35 fighter jets.

However, no planes have been able to take off as the runway has “melted” in hot conditions.

Runways can be deemed unsafe when the tarmac becomes sticky under the sun.

A source told Sky News that the decision was taken on Monday morning and runaway had been impacted by the heat.

In a statement from the RAF, the spokesperson for the airforce said: “During this period of extreme temperature flight safety remains the RAF’s top priority, so aircraft are using alternative airfields in line with a long-established plan.

“This means there is no impact on RAF operations."
