Shoppers in Trowbridge's Tesco Extra are faced with empty freezers as the store malfunctions in extreme heat.
Temperatures have been rocketing in Wiltshire today (19/07) as the UK faces the hottest day ever recorded- and now the freezers in the Tesco superstore on County Way have broken down as a result.
A sign put up in the shop reads: ‘We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by these refrigeration breakdowns due to the extreme temperatures we are experiencing.'
A Tesco spokesperson told this newspaper: “Some refrigeration and freezer units at our Trowbridge store are currently undergoing maintenance and our maintenance teams are working hard to get them back up and running. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
There are many reasons freezers can break down in the hot weather.
The increased air temperature means refrigerators and freezers have to work a lot harder to keep food cool and fresh.
As well as this- the warmer the temperature in the fridge gets, the more likely it is that heat-loving bacteria will thrive, meaning that there are many complications for big food stores around the county today.
And temperatures are still climbing, according to the Met Office.
