Being born one of Wales' rugby heartlands, South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland is more familiar with the oval ball.

But the country's new Secretary of State was at the birthplace of Welsh football this week.

And not everyone was pleased.

Sir Robert took part in an event hosted by Wrexham Council at the Racecourse Ground, the home of the newly-made city’s National League football team - now co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

He was there alongside Jacob Rees-Mogg, minister of state for Brexit opportunities and government efficiency, and Wrexham’s Conservative MP Sarah Atherton.

According to the Welsh Office, Sir Robert was there with his fellow minister “to discuss the opportunities that the UK Government's Places for Growth programme could bring to Wales' newest city".

The Places for Growth programme sets out to increase the number of civil servants working outside London with the aim of boosting growth in other areas, and making civil service jobs more attractive without the high costs of living in, or commuting to, London.

But not everyone, especially in Wrexham’s fan base, was happy at the news

@alarchwen1968 tweeted: “Local  Tory MP or no........who the hell at the club thinks it's a good move to sanction this kind of photo op? These people have no interest in the club.....just their own vanity.

“Bringing Rees-Mogg in makes it even worse.”
