MICHELIN stars are not easy to come by, particularly in Swindon.

In fact, there are 15 Michelin star-rated restaurants in Wiltshire but as of yet, no eateries in the town have received one of the prestigious awards.

Despite this, we know there are plenty of establishments to shout about in our town because they are so good.

They might not fit into Michelin’s strict criteria to gain one of the converted stars but there are many places that you still need to try – or try once again.

The stars are awarded to restaurants that Michelin considers the very best in a given area, and recipients gain immense prestige and exposure along with the honour.

Even without a star, we want to spread the word that they can still be remarkable.

So we thought we’d shout about some of the best independents of our own.

The Jewel In The Crown, Victoria Road

A Swindon mainstay, The Jewel In The Crown has served top-notch Indian food to people in the town for many years, and it never disappoints.

It is regarded as one of, if not the best Indian restaurant in Swindon and is thought of highly by residents, who have rated it very highly on Trip Advisor.

DOUGH&Co, Regent Circus

We know that pizza isn't going to set the world alight when it comes to judging for Michelin stars, but one of the town's newest eateries - DOUGH&Co certainly makes a good pizza.

It's all wood-fired and there's a wide selection of delicious, and unusual, topping choices like pear and walnut and Spanish paella.

The New Calley Arms, Church Road, Wanborough

There are lots of pubs that make great food in Swindon, like The Windmill in Freshbrook, The Cold Harbour in Blunsdon, The Baker's Arms in Badbury and The Bell Inn in Purton but the Wanborough venue serves up consistently great home-cooked food.

I can personally vouch for the pork belly, lamb burger and fish and chips but people also rave about the Sunday Roast.

The Greek Olive, Faringdon Road

A family-run restaurant serving up smiles and interaction along with very popular Mediterranean and Greek cuisine, with both getting reviewed well by happy customers.

It's been described as lively, unpretentious and has a great atmosphere and by all accounts, the food isn't too bad either.

Other restaurants that are unlikely to win a Michelin star, but are still good include Pick Up Point, Funky Grilla and Kutting Chai.
