Children attending a living-statue art event in Old Town have revealed who they'd like to see statues of built in Swindon.

It follows a new partnership between South Swindon Parish Council and arts and education charity Prime Theatre, who are working together to put on a series of free events in the Town Gardens throughout August.

The first of which, involving actor, musician and historian Louise Jordan, took place on Friday, August 12, and invited young people aged between 10-18 to explore who deserves to be a statue in Town Gardens.

Louise performed as a statue of Florence Nightingale on the bandstand.

South Swindon Parish Council thanked Louise and revealing who the young children that took part wanted to see immortalised at the park.

"Thank you to Louise Jordan and Prime Theatre for partnering with us on this fantastic workshop for young people in the Town Gardens," it said.

"We had a great time finding out about who our young residents would like to see statues of in Swindon - from David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg to Marilyn Monroe, J.R.R. Tolkien, She-Ra and one special grandfather!"

In addition to that event, young creatives aged 7-14 are invited to take part in Arts Award Adventures throughout the week of August 15.

Separate pairs of days for those aged 7-10 and 11-14 will be an exciting mix of music, art, craft, film and drama led by different professional artists. The inclusive and accessible activities will earn each young person an Arts Award qualification.

Neil Hopkins from the parish council said: “We’re delighted to offer these opening partnership activities for free to a new generation of Swindonians. This is a great chance to showcase the town’s future creatives while engaging them with the fascinating history of the Town Gardens.”

Helen Morley, Prime’s Creative Arts programme lead, added: “We’re thrilled to be opening up this beautiful park together for young people in so many creative ways. There’s something for everyone in the activities, no experience needed, just be ready to have a good time in a beautiful location!”

Arts Award Adventure days are exclusively available to young people living in the South Swindon parish. Places are limited, food is provided and free transport is also available for those otherwise unable to attend.
