After a fierce competition, a young Swindon girl's artwork has been chosen to become a mural in the town.

The Redcliffe Collective, who recently transformed a graffiti-ridden wall on Redcliffe Street in Rodbourne, held the competition for children aged 12 and under over the last few weeks.

Their aim was to find the next bit of inspiration for the artist group's next bit of public street art and after members of the public voted between the final two entries on a Facebook poll, 12-year-old Christina Paterson's entry was declared the winner.

Christina's dad Robin said his daughter, whose design was based on her love of skating and included focal points from around the area, was unusually speechless when she found out she had won.

"All I could get out of her was that she was 'chuffed to bits!', but she said she feels so pleased to have her picture chosen and is very excited to see her art recreated 'jumbo', as she put it," he said.

Christina has just left school at Even Swindon where she was a head pupil and is now looking forward to the challenges of secondary school in September.

She said that she found out about the competition in the school newsletter and knew that she had to enter.

"I had been watching the progress of the murals on Redcliff Street for a while, then I saw the competition in my school newsletter and inspiration struck - and knew immediately what my picture would be.  I wanted to show myself skating around Rodbourne with the main focal points of our community."

Christina loves skating. She said she enjoys the feeling of freedom this gives her and even taught herself how to do it.

Her dad added: "Christina is tenacious and will strive to master new skills whether this is teaching herself to sew or roller skate, no matter how many attempts it takes or how many bruised shins or cut knees.  Her perseverance always inspires me."

The second place entry was submitted by a 6-year-old named Emily, who narrowly missed out on winning.

All of the shortlisted entry designs that the Redcliffe Collective received from children in Swindon were put on display at St Augustine's Church in Rodbourne so that everyone could see the art on display.

Helen Salter, from The Redcliffe Collective, said: "Wow what local talent! Thank you to all the children and parents for taking the time to enter. We really also have such amazing budding artists!"
