SOME exceptional performances in the GCSE exams have delighted pupils and staff at Hummersknott Academy in Darlington.

Many students have done far better than they expected, and are looking forward to the next stages of their education.

Phoebe Stephenson, who wants to study Law, Politics and Graphics at Sixth Form, got a Grade 9 in Art – equivalent to an A*, while her friend, Madeleine Hawksby, achieved 9s in History and RS.

Madeleine said: “I was worried after seeing the A Level results, but I’m really happy with my results. I’m hoping to study History, Literature, and Philosophy at Sixth Form, and will just see where I am after the first year before making any further plans.”

Izzy Gwyther, who said she was relieved it was all over, achieved all 7s and 8s – equivalent to Grade A – and is hoping to go on to study vulcanology after sixth form.

Both were delighted to have done so well and James Keating, Executive Principle of Hummersknott Academy Trust, said: “Nationally, students have faced the most disruptive two years on the lead up to these exams, but they’ve been magnificent and we have had some excellent performances.

“The year group has been prepared fully by the teaching staff, who have also had to adapt to deal with the changing situation while bringing out the best in the students.

“They deserve everything they’ve got today – this is their passport to the next stage of their lives and we wish them all the very best.”

Head of School, Nick Merifield, agreed, saying: “Most of the pupils have done better than they thought they would, and credit must be given to the teaching staff who have been exceptional.

“They have gradually been building the students up, and they, in turn, have been galvanized by the unusual situation and most have done far better than they thought they would.”
