A 55-year-old man has been arrested by Wiltshire Police on suspicion of making threats to kill, arson with intent and attempted assault on an emergency worker.

The arrest follows a siege last more than five hours at a semi-detached house in Glebe Road, Trowbridge.

A police spokesman said: "We attended the scene at about 3.15pm following calls from a concerned member of the public.

"Specially trained police negotiators engaged with a distressed man who was refusing to leave a property in Glebe Road. The road was closed for most of the evening as a precaution.

"After a number of hours, the man allowed himself to be taken into custody. There were no reported injuries."

The man was taken into custody after a siege lasting more than five hours as all three emergency services were called out to the scene in Glebe Road on the town’s Studley Green estate.

The residential street was blocked off by police as the man threatened to set fire to himself and to burn down his home and allegedly made threats of violence towards the 999 crews at the scene.

The siege began at around 3.30pm after reports that the man was threatening to torch the semi-detached property and escalated during the evening as threats were allegedly made.

At the peak of the incident, up to seven police vehicles, two ambulances, a paramedic, and two fire appliances attended the scene, as well as up to ten armed police officers and a police dog handler.

Two specially-trained negotiators also attended the scene, as police attempted to engage with the man and bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion.

The South Western Ambulance Service sent several hazardous area response team units from Bristol to the scene, as residents and other people were urged by police to avoid the area.
