A tornado warning is in place for parts of Wiltshire.

It comes hot on the heels of a yellow thunderstorm warning by the Met Office for the county, which came into force on Monday afternoon and is set to be in place until 1am on Tuesday (September 6).

The western side of Wiltshire is covered by the tornado warning, meaning towns such as Chippenham, Trowbridge and Warminster could be affected.

An update on the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation's (TORRO) website states: "Rather intense vertically-stacked low is to the SW of the Republic of Ireland.

"A shortwave trough is moving ENE and will overspread the area this afternoon and evening. Convection has developed ahead of a more general area of showery rain, whilst other convection may develop within the showery rain.

"Shear will be sufficient for cell organisation and perhaps rotation, leading to the risk of modestly large hail and gusty winds. Additionally, one or two tornadoes cannot be ruled out, especially from pre-frontal convection."

This comes as The Met Office issues a 12-hour yellow weather warning for the South West, as Wiltshire is set to be hit with torrential rain and thunderstorms following a period of sunny and wet weather over recent days.
