A DEDICATED charity worker has crocheted her way through 400 metres of blankets and used miles of wool in her fundraising campaign for diabetes.

Now generous Advertiser readers have ensured that June Kent's incredible feat can continue.

Great grandmother June, 78, of Hopton Close, Freshbrook, has sold home-made crochet blankets for the last 20 years to raise money for Diabetes UK.

She contacted the Advertiser a week ago after running out of wool and appealed for donations- and the people of Swindon duly obliged.

She said: "We had a fantastic response - they were ringing up for ages.

"The people were so nice and most of them said we have someone with diabetes in the family so we know what it's all about and they were only too keen to pass it on."

June has been fundraising for 32 years, ever since her son Colin was diagnosed with diabetes aged nine.

June said: "It was a shock, but you thought at least it's something that can be treated."

In the past, June has always bought the wool herself, but on a pension her money has only been able to stretch so far.

"I don't mind paying, but it does get a bit hard," she said.

"In the past we've always got these bits and bobs, but it's difficult with eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. They all have birthdays, don't they?"

June's next sale will be at the mall at ASDA in West Swindon on April 19 from 8.30am until lunchtime and she has another sale booked for June 14.

June would still like to hear from people with donations, particularly bric-a-brac.

Contact her on 01793 341676 and it can be collected or delivered.
