THREE streetwise schoolchildren were first past the post in a competition on road safety.

The pupils from Holy Rood Junior School in Upham Road ensured the school retained its title as champion of the Junior Road Safety Quiz for a second year.

Lee Pearson and Donal Mann, both 11, and 10-year-old Joe Forrester beat teams from 18 other schools, in the Swindon Council organised initiative.

Deputy headteacher Robin Christian said: "They took it very seriously and took the book home to study in the evenings.

"We have always placed a high priority on road safety because we have a large catchment area and have children travelling to school in many different ways.

"One of our long-standing Friday assembly messages is always to follow the green cross code. We have also recently had the first anniversary of opening our very successful zebra crossing outside the school."

Headteacher Sally Inskip said: "It is a tremendous achievement to win the competition in two consecutive years.

"It is a credit to Mr Christian who helped Lee, Donal and Joe to prepare for the contest."

The boys had a choice of three prizes and chose a tour of the Adver offices and BBC Radio Swindon .
