TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill after two articulated lorries were in collision on the A419.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway in Stratton St Margaret just before the Turnpike roundabout yesterday at 3pm.

Paramedics treated one of the drivers after he injured his knee.

Both were in shock after the accident.

Four fire engines were called to the scene, including an emergency special unit.

Eye-witness Simon Wilding, 36, from North Cerney, near Cirencester, said: "I feared for my life when I saw the lorry plough into the central reservation after the collision.

"I was travelling on the opposite carriageway, going towards Swindon in my Ford Transit at the time.

"There was shrapnel on the road from the lorry as it was carrying stone."

The road was closed for five hours while while it was cleared, resulting in long tailbacks.
