It stands, isolated and incongruous on a cleared site ready for redevelopment.

But some answers have emerged about what this red brick building, which dates back at least a century is, although its ultimate fate is yet unknown.

Standing on Corporation Street this building is still used as an electricity substation by energy provider Scottish and Southern Electricity  Networks, although possibly not for the long term.

A spokesman for the company said: “Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks uses the building in Corporation Street, Swindon to house a substation as part of the electricity infrastructure supplying power to the local area. The building itself is owned by Swindon Borough Council.

“Discussions and plans to move the substation equipment from the current site on Corporation Street are ongoing, with the potential for the equipment to be relocated to an existing SSEN site nearby.

“SSEN would like to reassure its customers in Swindon that the building works in Corporation Street and the potential plans to relocate the substation have no impact on their power supplies.”

The rest of the buildings along that stretch of Corporation Street have been cleared and Swindon Bus Station next to the cleared site will also be demolished, once the Fleming Way Bus Boulevard is running, as part of the hoped-for regeneration of the area.

One thing we do know: the building is not listed.
