A Trowbridge man has been jailed after stealing items from Sainsbury's before assaulting two people in the same incident.

Cody Roger Rowley, of no-fixed-abode, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 5.

He was charged with two counts of assault by beating and pleaded not guilty to both offences.

Court records show that the incident took place on March 26, when the defendant stole £19 worth of alcohol from the Sainsbury’s in the town.

The 20-year-old was charged with theft and was found guilty of the offence during a trial on September 22.

Magistrates found the defendant guilty of the two common assault charges.

He was sent to prison for eight weeks and 16 weeks concurrent.

The defendant will therefore serve 16 weeks in custody.

Court records say Rowley was put behind bars because both attacks were unprovoked.

He was ordered to pay £128 as a victim surcharge. No order for costs was made.

Additionally, no separate penalty was given for the theft offence.
