Wiltshire commuters travelling home on the railway are facing disruption this evening.

A train has hit an object near Westbury which has resulted in the line being blocked, whilst an investigation takes place.

It is currently unclear what this object is.

All lines are blocked on the Great Western mainline between Reading and Taunton and train services running through this area may be delayed or diverted.

Great Western Railway says disruption is expected to last until 8pm this evening.

Buses are conveying passengers between Swindon and Pewsey in both directions until further notice.

A spokesperson for GWR said: “A driver has contacted the Signaller to advise their train has hit an object. It is not yet clear what this object is.

“The line will be blocked to allow the driver to investigate. We're sorry for any disruption this brings to your travel plans today.”

Update: Lines have now reopened but disruption is expected to last until 8.30pm
