A logistics manager is set to take on an epic challenge in aid of a dementia charity after being inspired by his mother who can no longer recognise him.

Chris Jones's mum Sheila has been living with the condition for eight years and no longer recognises her son.

But the 53-year-old has been inspired to take on a gruelling 300-mile cycle ride in aid of Alzheimer's Research.

Chris, from Longcot near Shrivenham, said: “It’s a really horrible condition, my mum was stable for a while and then it started flipping and went downhill.

“She went into a care home and she doesn’t recognise me anymore which is sad.

“I guess it can’t be long in her current state, but with Alzheimer’s, your body can be okay, but it’s your mind that goes. So, she could live a few years yet.

“It’s the one thing I dread getting when I’m older.”

Chris's challenge will take place on an exercise bike in his home. He is aiming to complete the full 300 miles by the end of November.

Chris added: “I’m trying to raise more awareness of Alzheimer’s and also getting a bit fitter as well.

“My mum used to be a primary school teacher and she was also a swimming instructor.

“I’ve had messages from people whom my mum used to teach how to swim and they’ve donated a bit of money as well.

“It’s been really nice having those kind of people getting in contact and offering their support.”
