A teenager from Devizes was arrested following a disorder in Calne town centre yesterday (7/11) afternoon which left three people injuried.

Officers were called to The Pippin area shortly after 3pm following a report of a disorder involving two groups of youths from Calne and Devizes.

A 15-year-old boy sustained an injury to his leg and two other youths sustained injuries during the disorder which lasted for more than two hours.

Officers carried out extensive enquiries at the scene and arrested a 15-year-old boy from Devizes on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was taken to Melksham custody for questioning and has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Locals rang the emergency number for police after a fight started when several young men from the Devizes area arrived in Calne. Most of those involved were said to be under the age of 18.

Five police officers managed to separate the two groups and the incident is said to have lasted until 5.30pm.

The disorder ended when the group of youths from Devizes boarded a bus and left the area.

Sergeant Michael Tripp said: “Officers were quick to respond to the initial 999 call in relation to this incident and swiftly arrested a teenager who has been questioned and released on bail while officers continue to progress their enquiries.

“Violent disorder of any kind will not be tolerated, especially those that potentially involve weapons.

“This incident would have caused concern and upset within the local community and that is not acceptable.

“There will be a heightened police presence in the coming days while reassurance patrols are conducted and enquiries in relation to this incident are ongoing. Please do not be alarmed by this and if you have concerns please speak to an officer.

“We are currently working alongside Neighbouring Police teams and the local schools in relation to this matter.

“Yesterday’s disorder happened in daylight at a busy time of day. We understand the incident, or events leading up to the disorder, may have been witnessed by members of the public who have not yet spoken to police. If this was you, please do get in touch.
