A new Viking axe throwing venue will open this Saturday on New Road in Chippenham town centre.

The venue belongs to escape room company Enigma Rooms and franchise owners Emma and John Tanner.

Mr Tanner is Chippenham born and wanted to bring the sport to his hometown.

Axe throwing originated in Canada but branch manager, Melanie Yexley, says its popularity is growing in the UK.

She said: “There has been loads of interest… the demographic (for axe throwing) is wide and long.

“It really is something to do for everyone that wants to give something different a go”.

A session will see visitors get a full hour of axe throwing, guided by their own “axe-pert” who can help them with their technique.

Axe throwing is open to anybody aged ten and over for £20 per person, although under 18s will require an accompanying adult, and can accommodate groups of up to six per lane.

Those with more advanced skills may even be able to play competitively. The franchise is planning a partnership with the Knife Axe Throwing and Tomahawk Throwing Association to host league games.

Eventually, the venue will also hold three escape rooms, including one which involves players being kidnapped by their hosts.

Mrs Yexley says these escape rooms should all be available by February of next year.
