A flood alert has been issued for several parts of Wiltshire following hours of heavy rainfall earlier today.

As well as the River Biss at Trowbridge and Westbury, there are also alerts for the River Cole and Dorcan Brook in east Swindon, and the Upper Bristol Avon area, which covers Chippenham, Melksham, Lyneham, Malmesbury and Royal Wootton Bassett.

In Church Street, Bradford on Avon, a group of nursery school children just managed to esacape getting drenched by a Audi driver passing through floods this afternoon.

The Environment Agency said that river levels have risen at the Trowbridge Paxcroft river gauge this morning as a result of heavy rainfall.

“They began to fall from 11:30 but have now started rising again. Consequently, the risk of flooding remains.

“We expect flooding may affect the Westbury Road (A363) at Yarnbrook, Hawkeridge Road at Horse Bridge, Shallow Wagon Lane at Heywood and West Ashton Road at Trowbridge. Flooding of properties is not forecast at this point.

“Further showery rainfall is forecast throughout Tuesday evening and into Wednesday.

“We expect river levels to begin falling overnight on Tuesday 15/11/22. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are clearing weed screens.

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers which may be flooded and refer to local authority website for local road closures.”

According to the flood alert for the River Cole and Dorcan Brook, issued earlier on Tuesday, "property flooding is not currently expected".

"River levels have risen on the River Cole and Dorcan Brook as a result of overnight heavy rainfall.

"Therefore, flooding of roads and low-lying land is possible later this morning and through the day.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Please remain safe and aware of your local surroundings and refer to the 'River and Sea levels in England' webpage for current river levels."

The Environment Agency also says that "river levels have risen at the Brokenborough river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall throughout Tuesday morning".

"Consequently, the risk of flooding remains. We expect flooding to affect the road at Reybridge. Further showery rainfall is forecast throughout Tuesday evening and into Wednesday.

"We expect river levels to fall overnight on Tuesday 15/11/22, but they are forecast to rise again during Wednesday evening in response to another band of rainfall moving over the area.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff have been clearing weed screens.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers which may be flooded and refer to local authority website for local road closures."
