A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "We responded to reports of an incident at the Shield and Dagger Pub in Thames Avenue, Swindon at about 9.30pm yesterday."

"A man was taken to Great Western Hospital to be treated for suspected knife injuries not thought to be life threatening or life changing."

Swindon Advertiser:

"We arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm."

"He is currently in police custody."

Shocked residents said several police cars and ambulances arrived on the scene quickly.

Although Wiltshire Police's statement initially stated that the incident took place at the pub, this was confirmed not to be the case by a second statement.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson clarified: "It is thought that the incident took place outside the pub."

Thames Avenue was then cordoned off for the night but was open this morning.
